Heading outside for some wintertime fun like sledding, throwing snowballs or ice skating can be a sure-fire cure for cabin fever. It's also a great way for kids to get the 60 minutes of daily exercise they need.

Whatcom Speed Skating is also one of three speedskating clubs in the state of Washington — the other two are located in Tacoma and Vancouver. The Tacoma club is well-known for developing a handful of Olympians and winning numerous national club championships.

“People can really start at any age,” she said, adding that she regularly sees adults in their 60s and older registering for lessons. Some want to get back into their childhood hobby, while others are fulfilling a dream they didn’t have the time or freedom to pursue before.

No Colorado winter is complete without taking the first glide on a smooth ice skating rink. With the holiday season approaching, several ice (and imitation ice) rinks in Northern Colorado are preparing to open. Options range from indoor to outdoor facilities.
