Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently a very dangerous Category 5 storm, sitting off the Far North Queensland Coast some 350 kilometres northeast of Cooktown. Formed in the Coral Sea, Narelle is packing a punch, with sustained winds near the centre of 205km per hour and wind gusts to 285km per hour.
Cyclone Narelle has been upgraded to the maximum category five and could make a historic crossing for the first time in 100 years.
Residents in the Cook Shire have been told to shelter in place, and guests staying on Lizard Island have been evacuated as Cyclone Narelle rapidly approaches the Far North Queensland coast.
